Vegas - LA adventures

Just arrived back in New Zealand after nearly two weeks exploring Vegas and LA.

Had such an incredible time and loved every second of my first ever vacation in America.

Here is a selection of images i captured on my travels, please excuse the quality as many were taken on my phone. I found it really difficult lugging around a big camera all the time so resorted to snap shots.

These images capture the details which will inspire my next collections, and a few silly shots of me thrown in, as you can see i really embraced the Disney culture at Disneyland!

I spent seven days in Vegas and was largely inspired by the hive of activity, colours, sounds and constant movement of the place. I watched an incredible show at the MGM Grand called "Crazy Horse Paris Cabaret", the costuming and lingerie was absolutely stunning and avant-garde at its finest. Unfortunately i could not take photographs in all of the shows including Cirque Du Soleil 'O', the costuming was absolutely out of this world.

The remaining five days of the trip were in LA, managed to get to Disneyland, stay in Beverly Hills and briefly explore Santa Monica and Hollywood.

One thing that really amazed me was the beautiful floral arrangements in all of the hotels we visited and stayed in.

So excited to get sketching new designs!

WOW!

It has actually been just over two months since i last did a blog post and time has really just vanished over these last few months.

After the chaos of Miss Lingerie Model NZ in October i realised i had little over a month until my wedding, so between preparations, fittings etc and while still running my business i had no spare time what so ever to blog.

But im back! and my new goal is to do at least one post every week!

A massive congrats to Victoria who took the title and will be competing in Auckland alongside the other regional finalists in the National final on October 1st 2011.

This set was made from red and black silk/satin and features rhinestone, ribbon and pearl detailing with a gorgeous big bow on the back of the knickers and a matching head piece.

I have just completed 15 custom made lingerie sets for contestants entering the regional heats so i have a lot of images to share. I have decided to wait until the girls have competed in the heats before uploading the pics so that there is an element of surprise on the night. High waisted knickers, hit or miss?

My last post has sparked a little debate about the sexiness of this style that i would like to elaborate on. Lets just start off by pointing out that high waisted knickers are one of my biggest sellers.

I am often told by males that they think this style is 'ugly' with the exception of the images above which when presented to male friends stated that yes they were sexy 'but only on hot models'. Weather or not you like or loath this style I think high waisted knickers are here to stay.

DO NOT SAVE ‘SPECIAL” LINGERIE FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS

Honestly! It’s a waste of time and money. We all buy beautifully crafted and exquisite pieces of lingerie at some point, bring it home, try it on again, admire it in the mirror, lay it out on the bed, admire some more, imagine a time when we would wear it then safely store it (tags attached) and then never wear it. Or we do after a long time and our boobs are bigger, bum is smaller, whatever, it no longer fits like it did when we first brought it. Put on that special set today!

MIX AND MATCH

Yes I said it and most people will disagree but I am a firm believer that you do not have to wear a matching set everyday. Why? Why not? How many of you buy separates? I do. I know a lot of women will say ‘I wear a matching set everyday’ this is a lie and who are you?

HANDWASH HANDWASH HANDWASH

Self explanatory, although I will be honest I break this rule all the time, but I make knickers for a living so they are easily replaceable.

PRICE DOES NOT REFLECT QUALITY (this is an entire essay within itself)

WEAR A BLACK OR PRINTED BRA UNDER A SHEER TOP

This is like a big fashion NO NO, but I think it looks sexy

NEVER EVER WEAR A BRA WITH INVISIBLE STRAPS

Hey guess what? You can still see them and they are super tacky! Who invented those and why?

MEN: DO NOT BUY LINGERIE FOR WOMEN!

You will A. most likely get the wrong size and B. pick something you like which is not necessarily what she likes. If you do buy her lingerie find her favorite bra (the one she wears most often) and check the size first, the same applies to panties although if you are buying a different brand the size will most likely be different also, yes it is complicated! If I haven’t completely put you off make sure you get an exchange card or better yet just get a voucher!

DO NOT FEAR LINGERIE

The correct fit and style/cut is everything although you are never going to look like the model in the campaign unless of course you are a model

MEN DO NOT FIND HIGH WAISTED UNDERWEAR SEXY

Find me a male that does and I will send you a free pair! (he must not be gay or over the age of 60)

Another custom made set for a client that i have recently finished.

This set was designed and created to suit the clients requirements, my brief was to come up with a four piece set that was ivory in colour and included ruffles, pearls and lots and lots of sparkle.

This set is made from a silk satin and includes an underwire bra, ruffle edge knickers, bow tie suspender belt and matching head piece.

It is that time of year again, the Miss Lingerie Model NZ National final is just over two and a half months away and I am very excited about the show!

Behind the scenes i have been working on my collection for the show, this takes months of preparation, designing, sourcing materials, constructing, fitting, refining etc

The collection is 'show' lingerie, so think elaborate, dramatic, fantasy, beautiful garments that are made for the stage, not everyday lingerie in the slightest!

The entire collection which consists of 12 sets plus the garments for the top 5 contestants take me around 200 hours plus to create, i spend a solid two-three days on each garment as there are so many fine details and lots of hand stitching involved.

I will be uploading 'work in progress' images over the following weeks.

Hot coral lace and white underwire bra set i have just finished for a client, this is a one off custom made set.

Its hard to imagine from the images but the white chiffon flows from the back of the bra straps. This set is to be worn on stage and the colour and sparkles will look amazing under lights.

A set like this generally takes me an entire day to create as i usually have to alter or create new patterns for the knickers, it also depends on how much detail and hand-stitching is involved.

The runaway romantics collection was inspired by my love of love and the romantic journey of runaway emotions that empowers you and takes over when you let yourself feel and be loved. I wanted to design a collection that embraced the notions of romance by creating a three-part range that encompasses lust love and marriage. The lingerie in the collection reflects these stages in relationships.

I looked at creating new styles and re-working favourite design elements such as the signature keyhole back bodysuit and ruffle bum knickers that were functional yet still modern and very wearable. Each piece within the black, bridal and sleepwear range is designed to be mixed and matched to create different looks suited to individual taste and style preference.

This is my largest collection to date and infuses my love of pattern, texture and fabrics.

At present i currently have 16 custom made underwire sets on the go!

Above are images of one set i have just completed for a client. The brief was to create a set that was girly and sparkly! I love working on custom sets as i get to design and sew something that is true collaboration between client and designer, i work with my customers ideas and apply it my aesthetic to create one off pieces.

This particular set is to be worn on stage so the sparkles will really bring it to life!

The above set is made from white and baby pink silk satin, lace, rhinestones and pearls and for the headpiece i have added pink and white feathers.

I get asked all the time if i just buy a bra and then embellish it, the answer is no, i hand-make every set, including the bra which yes is very difficult to construct and has taken me three years to perfect.

Every single underwire bra set is totally unique and one off, i never make the same set twice therefore offering my clients exclusivity

The next few months will be super busy as i am working on designing and creating a new lingerie range for Miss Lingerie Model NZ (the third year i have been lucky enough to feature my work in this amazing show) and Project Born which is a relatively new high end Lingerie show that includes dance, drama, music, amazing creations from Weta Workshop and this year lingerie by Emma Highfield. I am very excited to be involved with Project Born as the show is raising money for the Neonatal trust New Zealand.

I am actually looking forward to the long days and even longer nights in my sewing room, lingerie is my life! well a big part of it anyway!

The countdown actually started weeks ago but it has somehow managed to sneak up on me and now i am left with three days before i shoot the new Emma Highfield Lingerie collection!

Massive eeekk! Although i must admit i work at my best under pressure.

In hindsight i could have made this into three mini collections as it includes three very different elements in terms of aesthetic and function:

Sleep, Black and Bridal

A lot of the pieces also come in a few colour options, which i love as it offers a bit of variety but it also means i am having to sew all of the pieces in the collection in these various colour options as i want to photograph them all.

Very excited though about the little road trip we have organised, heading down to the gorgeous Bay Of Plenty to shoot the new collection.

Bodysuits - intimates as outerwear

There is no doubt that bodysuits or 'bodies' happen to be one of my most favourite lingerie pieces to wear and to design. The image above is of the keyhole lace bodysuit from my 'Days Ending With Y' collection (2010) that happens to be my most popular piece to date and has coincidently now sold out. But never fear! i am looking to reinvent this piece in a coming collection.

There is something about the versatility of bodysuits that can be functional as both lingerie and clothing (intimates as outwear). I love that you can simply add a cute blazer and either a skirt, shorts or pants (with a bodysuit) to create an outfit and make a fashionable statement.

Below are examples of some amazing bodysuits, i wish i could own them all!

And yes i do get asked ALL the time; why on earth would i promote other designers, particularly ones that make lingerie!?

Well the answer is simple: I LOVE LINGERIE, i always have and i always will, long before i was creating it i was well and truly obsessed

There has always been something about black and white photography that has evoked a sense of nostalgia for me.

Don’t get me wrong I am also passionate about colour but there is an edge to black and white that is now becoming somewhat of a niche medium. I think I have an appreciation due to the fact the first images I ever developed by hand were black and white and I know how painstakingly tricky it can be to achieve the whitest whites and the blackest blacks manually. Digital to me is an entirely different world, you can shoot in colour and with one click on a computer alter the image to black and white.

While I love black and white from an artistic point of view it is hardly practical in relation to shooting a collection particularly one that includes garments with colour!

In 2002 I was starting my first year at Elam School of Fine Arts and came across this image of Kate Moss Shot by Craig McDean for I.D Magazine that will be forever implanted in my mind. I was researching for a project and I guess it was the first time (as an impressionable yet ‘I know the world and am so mature for my age’ 17 year old) I had really seen any form of fashion photography and I was in awe. The image of Miss Moss featuring fish net stockings, cowboy boots and an army green military jacket painted with the words ‘God save the queen’ has become an iconic image of my youth and made me realise I wanted to get involved. The funny thing was I didn’t even know how I wanted to get involved.

With Fashion? As what?

All I knew is that I wanted to be a part of this, a part of this world, and at that stage I thought there were three choices: model/photographer/designer. I had no idea that make-up artists, hair stylists, editors, stylists, bookers, assistants etc etc even came into the equation, little did I know there were options! I guess I asked myself the question, is fashion art? And is art fashion? How and where do these worlds meet?

At that stage in my life I was adamant I was going to be a painter (a ‘real’ artist), and I couldn’t really fathom how it would all fit in together, so I painted, then I did design and eventually in my last year of art school I somehow did a complete leap and bound into the unknown and was submitting extravagant costumes made from recycled materials and installations of deconstructed vintage lingerie. At the time my tutor said to me ‘is this art? Or is this fancy dress?’ it was FASHION!
Is fashion fine art? I am still undecided.

So here I am a fashion designer, or an artist (as I also still paint), or a crafter, or more easily summed up as a creative. So back to the image of Miss Moss, I recently rediscovered it and it got me thinking about the last time I did any form of professional/enthusiast photography which was the year in which I first discovered this image in 2002. I was using a good old manual SLR film camera and yes back then we had to develop our own film and process our own images in order to pass bursary. For my next collection I have decided to pick the camera back up for the first time in 10 years (digital this time) and photograph it myself and I am excited. Wish me luck!

A large proportion of my work is inspired by ballet attire, leotards, tulle tutus, little beaded details that finish a costume and of course the ribbons! As an ex ballet dancer there is nothing like putting on your first tutu or a brand new pair of soft buttery pink ballet shoes which for me is also the same feeling that you get when you slip into new lingerie. I am in love with all of these gorgeous images that make me want to dance around the house like I did as a child!

What a week! I have been full of the flu and have basically spent the last five

days either in bed or on the couch.

It is extremely frustrating and boring and I have hardly got any work done

not to mention the growing pile of orders that I have had to neglect.

On the plus side I have had ample time on the computer and have

spent the past few days searching for beautiful and inspiring wedding ideas.

Our wedding theme is modern vintage (well it just evolved into that theme really)

and I have spent the past couple of months scouring second hand shops

for vintage crockery as I have a love for all things antique

and wanted to include pieces such as vintage teacups, cake stand etc

into the décor of the reception.

I now have close to 60 vintage teacup and saucer sets and have found

some creative and innovative ways to utilise these gems.

Tomorrow is a new day!

For the past few months I have been considering starting a blog. Initially I wanted the focus to be about the Emma Highfield brand, original content, a place to share the out-takes, behind the scenes images, the design process, shoots, thoughts, projects and all things Emma Highfield Lingerie. Then it occurred to me that while most of you will be drawn to this because of those factors there is more I want to share! While the focus will be about Lingerie I also want to include images of the things that inspire me, things I love, my other creative outlets and the thousands of images I have accumulated over the last few years. I hope that this will become more of a creative outlet than anything else.

Over the next 6 months I am involved in many exciting projects including Miss Lingerie Model NZ, Project Born, new collections and the most important of all my wedding day! I thought I would share a handful of images of a few of the pieces I have been working on for the wedding; I love to document everything in stages. I have given myself the huge task of making almost everything I can including the invites, table decorations, favors, flower girl dresses, head pieces, handcrafted fabric bouquets and of course my own bridal lingerie.

I am also very excited about the new Emma Highfield Lingerie collection that we will be shooting in mid July. The collection consists of three parts: Bridal, Black (lingerie) and Bed (sleepwear) and for all the behind the scenes footage check back here regularly.
